Prime Minister Nawaf Salam received today at the Grand Serail a parliamentary delegation that included members from the “Loyalty to the Resistance” bloc, the “Development and Liberation” bloc, and MP Jihad Al-Samad.
Speaking on the delegation behalf, MP Ali Hassan Khalil said: “We discussed a bill to amend the current electoral law, and we emphasized what we conveyed to the President yesterday, that there is a law in force and the government has to take the necessary executive steps to implement it and hold elections at the specified time. This is the main issue we focused on, which is that there should be no formulas that delay or obstruct the holding of elections on time, or formulas that increase the division in the country and go beyond the need for a climate of agreement on the adoption of an electoral law.”
Khalil added: “We also conveyed to the Prime Minister our concerns about the risks of approving the amendment to the current law as a result of the lack of the principle of equal opportunities and the freedom of the voter to express his opinion.”
He further stated: “We hope that the Prime Minister will be in a position to avoid deepening the division and finding the necessary way out to move forward with the necessary steps to hold elections on time according to the law in force, which determines the establishment of the 16th district representing the Lebanese diaspora. We are very keen that the diaspora participates and plays its role in this field.”
